Cattle pedigree and the relatedness check

Every animal's tree builds itself from the connections you write down at calving.

The tree comes out of the daily work

You do not enter a separate pedigree. When you record a calving and link the calf to its dam, and the mating says who the sire is, the connection already exists — the tree rises out of it. The longer the farm works in the platform, the deeper the pedigree becomes, with no extra work at all.

From any animal's record you go up to dam, sire and grandparents, and down to the offspring. Bulls from outside the farm are kept separately, with their own details, so they appear correctly in the tree even if they were never in your herd.

Checking relatedness, before mating

Before a mating or an insemination, ViFerm can compare the pedigree of the female with that of the bull and tell you whether it knows of any relatedness between them. The check goes back four generations.

The result is information for your decision, not a ban. The platform blocks nothing: the farmer decides, knowing what the platform knows about his animals and what it does not.

What happens when data is missing

Here is the most important thing on this page. If the pedigree of one of the two animals is incomplete, ViFerm does not answer that they are unrelated. It shows a warning saying plainly that the data is insufficient, and that a connection not found does not mean there is none.

The difference is not a nuance. An “they are unrelated” said over an empty pedigree is a false statement whose consequences stand in the herd years later. An honest warning sends you to ask further.
